Gulaab Gang Review: Juhi’s evil wins over Madhuri’s good

Gulaab Gang Review
Rating: 3.5/5
Gulaab Gang is a female centric film which sees Madhuri Dixit and Juhi Chawla starring together for the first time. The two play the positive and negative lead roles respectively; though Juhi’s villain seems to have a bigger impact that Madhuri’s heroine. The real life rivals playing reel life rivals is an interesting thing to watch.
The film follows the story of Rajjo (played by Madhuri) and her struggles to educate herself in a place where it is a taboo for girls to even think about education. She fights all stereotypes and starts a band of pink saree clad crusaders -Gulaab Gang- who fight social injustice against women. Armed with sticks, they tackle issues of dowry, rape , food, electricity, etc. As they get more power, their focus shifts to the elections as they want to impact at a much larger scale. That is when all hell breaks loose as Rajjo takes on the mean politician Soumitra (played by Juhi).
The action scenes done by the dhak-dhak girl are a pleasant surprise as she impresses us just as the way she impressed us with her dancing skills. She has a lot more screen presence than Juhi but Juhi is the one who steals the show. She is Machiavellian in her political approach, slaps people and bosses over people; intimidates the s*** out of big police officers. She sheds crocodile tears as she talks about her dead husband during a political speech and in the next scene, curses the insurance company for not giving her the money that is due to her.
The only place where this movie falters is with the high number of songs. Other than this, it is a decent film to watch.
Overall Verdict: Watch it for the high octane Madhuri and the suave Juhi.
